Abstract
Objectives: Researching the disease structure and some occupational diseases of seafarers on the ships of VOSCO and Vitrans chart companies. Material and method: Crossed and prospective study. Results: The disease structure of seafarers were as follow: The highest incidence was metabolic diseases, nutritional and endocrinal were 69.33%/85.67% (before and after the trip) (P<0.01); the second was diseases of respiratory system 39.00%/63.67%; Diseases of the digestive system 27.67%/66.33%; Diseases of circulatory system 24.33%/48.67 %; Infectious and parasitic diseases are 15.33%/43.33 %; Diseases of nervous system and behavior disorders was 28.67%/38.33%. There is closing linear relation between professional years with some diseases as: Diseases of circulatory system; diseases of mental and behavioural disorders, diseases of eyes and diseases of ears. Conclusion: The disease structure of seafarers were as follow: the first was diseases of metabolic, nutrition and endocrine, the second was diseases of respiratory system, next was diseases of the digestive system; diseases of circulatory system; infectious and parasitic diseases; diseases of nervous system and behavioral disorders. After the trip of one year at sea, the incidence of disease of seafarers increased clearly.
Biography
Nguyen Truong Son MD, PhD graduated from Hanoi Medical University in 1979. Since 1980, he have been working as lecturer and chairman of physiological department (from 1980-1988) for Haiphong Medical University, the head of functional diagnostic department of Haiphong?s Viet-Tiep general hospital (from 1980- 1994) and became chairman of maritime medical department from 1989 to now. He has finished the course of post graduate studies of maritime medicine at institute of tropical and maritime medicine in Gdynia, Poland (1988-1989). He was awarded PhD of medicine in 1995. He has been the Director of Vietnam National Institute of Maritime Medicine from 2001 till present. From 2004 to now, he is Chairperson of Maritime Medicine Association of Vietnam (VINAMAHA) and Director of Underwater and hyperbaric oxygen therapy. He has published 32 scientific works and 103 scientific papers in field of maritime environment and medicine and professional and working medicine in journals of domestic and international (5) medicine.
