Abstract

Background: One out of every 4 women has had an experience of sexual abuse at some time in their lifetime; one of every 6 or 7 men has had an experience of sexual abuse at some time in their lifetime. Most perpetrators are family members or well known to the victim (family friends, neighbors, teachers, coaches, clergy, community leaders). 12.9% of the U.S. population in 2009 (latest census of aging population) is 65 or older. Estimates are that by the year 2030 19% of the U.S. population will be 65 or older. Resilience and meaning seem to be the predictor of positive psychological outlook in later years. By the year 2030, 72.1 million Americans will be over the age of 65. Approximately, 25% of them or 18 million Americans will be older and survivors of sexual abuse. What does this mean? Victims of sexual assault are three times more likely to suffer from depression; six times more likely to suffer from PTSD, thirteen times more likely to abuse alcohol, 26 times more likely to abuse drugs and four times more likely to contemplate suicide. Resiliency and meaning may be the path to a successful aging population. This abstract will address the primary properties of resiliency and meaning in order to positively impact on the aging population of sexual abuse survivors. Summary: The world�??s population is aging and human trafficking, war, poverty and sexual assault impact victims for a lifetime. Resiliency and meaning appear to be the key for a life worth living. The ability to assist victims to survive and thrive throughout their lifetime will contribute to their optimal health and to the world�??s health.
