Abstract
Nasal polyps are a non-cancerous neoplastic disease affecting the nasal airway and paranasal sinuses, chronically affecting sinus health, airway patency, sense of smell and hearing. Infections, mostly bacterial but occasionally fungal are common but not universal. Inflammatory asthma often accompanies polyposis and some of these patients are highly allergic to aspirin and other NSAIDs. The inflammation consists prominently of eosinophils but allergies are found only in about half of these patients and may be co-morbid but not causal. Surgical improvement is usually temporary, leaving a need for effective medical strategies. Corticosteroids, both systemic and topical are mainstays of current treatment and there are many variations in drug choice and delivery. New biological modifiers offer promise including mepolizumab and omalizumab. Palliative treatment strategies are equally important to patients. This workshop will share the most up-to-date treatment agents and strategies for this life-altering disease.
