Abstract
Background: In UAE, thyroid cancer is the third most common cancer among both genders and second most common cancer in women. Management of thyroid cancer not only involves team experience but also use various guidelines. Among these, most comprehensive guidelines are available from American Thyroid Association (ATA), which are commonly adapted at other facilities and at our institute. Objectives: To evaluate thyroid cancer management in our local population by applying ATA guidelines (2015 version). Methodology: Retrospective chart review study of adult patients diagnosed with thyroid cancer from Dec 2020 to Dec 2021. Data analysis was done using SPSS 2022 software. Findings/Results: Our sample of confirmed thyroid cancer adult patients was majority females of variable race with prevalence to Eastern Asia presenting commonly with neck swelling. FNA results were mostly grade V/IV consistent with post-operative biopsy report of papillary carcinoma. Total thyroidectomy with central and/or peripheral neck dissection were performed. TNM staging system was used. TSH, TG and anti TG levels were monitored. Risk stratification was applied and determined the use of thyroid ablation therapy including the dose. Follow up with ultrasound was negative except for complicated cases requiring subsequent ablation/surgical intervention. Conclusion: ATA guidelines focus on risk stratification system and other factors such as age, gender, and laboratory assessment for markers, along with various therapeutic options. The implementation of ATA guidelines at our institution insured a standardized approach to treating thyroid cancer cases and yielded excellent patient management outcome.
