Abstract
Congenital laryngeal cyst, though a rare entity is precarious condition as it can frequently cause respiratory distress and in some cases even death. Predominantly these cysts are located in the supraglottis or glottis proper. The composition of the cyst wall often contains derivatives of the endoderm and mesoderm. This implies that they are bronchogenic cysts or more primitively, bronchopulmonary foregut malformations. Hence, on histomorphological grounds, a laryngeal duplication cyst can be called a bronchogenic cyst. Otolaryngologists however might term the congenital cysts as Type 1, 2a or 2b (according to Forte?s classification) taking into account the laryngoscopic, radiologic, intraoperative and pathological findings. This presentation aims to classify laryngeal cysts from a histopathologist?s point of view vis-a-vis a surgeon?s perspective.
