The effect of care given according to Watson’s human caring model on the meaning of life and
symptom management in cancer patients undergoing chemotherapy

Objective
: This study is to determine the effect of care given according to Watson's Model on the meaning of life, symptom
management in patients undergoing chemotherapy.
Methods
: The study was conducted in real test model with pre-test and post-test control group. The population of the study
consisted of adult cancer patients who applied to the day treatment units of the oncology outpatient clinic of Malatya. The
sample of the study consisted of 158 patients (79 patients in the experimental and control group) determined by using the
power analysis and selected by using random sampling method from this population. The data were collected between March-
September 2015 by using Introductory Questionnaire, Life Attitude Profile (LAP) and General Symptom Inventory. Nursing
care was provided 3 times once in every 2 weeks by the researcher to the patients in the experimental group at home according
to the Watson's model.
Results
: It was found that post-test total mean score of LAP, was 164.21±36.5 and total mean score of GSI was 55.06±13.19 in
the experimental group; whereas total mean score of LAP, was 127.31±10.61 and total mean score of GSI was 136.91±16.20.
Conclusion
: The care given according to Watson's Model to the patients undergoing chemotherapy affected the Life Attitude
of the patients, increased their meaning of life and decreased their symptom levels.
Biography
In 2004 I completed my license at Inonu University. In 2012 I finished my master's degree in Inonu University. I completed my doctor in the Public Health nurse of
Inonu University in 2016. I am currently working as an assistant professor in Inonu University Health Sciences Faculty Public Health nursing.
