Yamaguchi University was founded by Ueda Hoyo in the year 1815. From then onwards it has undergone many changes according to the needs of the times. It was established mainly as the core for the higher education and research in the region. It became National University in 2004 by the permissions of National University Corporation. In 1894 it became Yamaguchi Higher school which is a National institute of higher education. The school was reorganized into Yamaguchi Higher School of Commerce in February 1905, the third national commercial college in Japan, after Tokyo (1887) and Kobe (1902). The school was renamed Yamaguchi College of Economics in 1944. Yamaguchi University was started by integrating six public schools in Yamaguchi Prefecture, namely, (Revived) Yamaguchi Higher School, Yamaguchi College of Economics, Ube Technical College, Yamaguchi Normal School, Yamaguchi Youth Normal School and (Prefectural) Yamaguchi College of Veterinary Medicine and Animal Husbandry in 1949.
