It has partnerships with more than 600 universities and tertiary institutions, with many international students studying abroad at Waseda University each year.
Established in 1884, Waseda University accepted its first international student, and it established a special program designed for accepting Chinese students in 1905. These two key developments became the point of departure for our quest to attract students from throughout Asia. Waseda University continues to accept many international students various countries today and about 4,500 international students are at present.
Waseda University vision reflects desire to further enhance institutional profile by attracting outstanding students from both Japan and overseas and creating an environment for global education and research where different cultures can coexist and come together through various academic, linguistic and intellectual exchanges.
Waseda University has established a specialized section for international student recruitment and admissions within the Admissions Center called the International Admissions Office (IAO). The main functions of the IAO are international recruitment activities and development and implementation of admission schemes designed to meet the varied needs of international applicants. In cooperation with the Center for International Education, the IAO also provides support for international students at Waseda University in various areas including academics, scholarships and student housing.
