Waikato University

Waikato University owes its existence to two brave men who fought loudly for eight years, on behalf of the people of Waikato, to establish their own university. Since then weve never been afraid to do things differently. Today Waikato University is home to more than 12,000 students and has continued to be a breeding ground for independent thought and progressive learning. In 1989 (with a little help from NASA) we connected New Zealand to the Internet before going on to become the first University in New Zealand to have cyber-graduates, completing their teaching degrees online. In 2001 the first students from The University of Waikato at Tauranga graduated at a ceremony held in Tauranga. Our campus now covers 65 hectares and is a far cry from its modest beginnings in 1964 on what was largely farmland, with a handful of temporary buildings and a few staff.
The University of Waikato has evolved into an educational institution with its own distinct strength and character. We sit in the top 2% of the worlds 17,000 universities and rank 44th in the world for universities less than 50 years old. Our success is largely due to the foresight and drive of many hardworking people. Our 50th anniversary is a time to reflect on the valuable contributions people have made to the University of Waikato. Postgraduate study can be taught or research-based. A taught degree is a structured programme of study that consists of papers taught in lectures. Taught degrees are intended to develop knowledge or technique in a particular area of study. Research-based degrees offer you the opportunity to complete independent study and to explore a research topic with the assistance of a supervisor.
The University of Waikato is one of New Zealands major research organisations, playing a key role in the New Zealand economy and making a significant contribution to the international innovation system. Find out more about our Research & Expertise.
