The University of Porto is one of the Portuguese Open University located in Porto, and originated on 22 March 1911. It is the second-largest Portuguese university by number of registered students and has one of the most renowned research outputs in Portugal. The University of Porto was founded by declaration of March 22, 1911, issued by the Provisional Government of the First Portuguese Republic. The University of Porto became parsimoniously and scientifically independent, and teaching autonomy was officially renowned. According to the Webometrics Ranking the University of Porto was placed among the top 100 universities in Europe. In 2007, a Higher Education Evaluation & Accreditation Council of Taiwans ranking, placed the University of Porto in 459 rank. It was the only Portuguese university in the top 500 universities according to the Taiwanese ranking. Presently, there are 14 faculties and a postgraduate professional school at the university. The University of Porto is deeply committed to the development of its intercontinental relations, taking part in several university systems and collaboration groups — not only within Europe but also extending to the southern hemisphere countries of Portuguese language.
