University of Petroleum and Energy Studies (UPES) was established in the year 2003 through UPES Act, 2003 of the State Legislature of Uttarakhand. With an ambitious vision and unique approach, UPES emerged as an innovative institution offering industry-focused specialized graduate, post graduate and doctoral programs in key areas such as Energy, Infrastructure, Transportation, Information Technology, Design, Planning & Architecture, Public Policy and Legal studies. The university’s objective is to develop competent technocrats, professionals and managers who are ready to join the core industries. Advanced teaching methodologies, innovative and updated curricula and the focus on on-the-job exposure give UPES students the edge to be readily deployable in the chosen field. The core sectors that are playing a significant role in taking the nation and the world towards a future of our dreams are - Aerospace, Business, Design, Health, Safety & Environment, High Technology, Information Technology, Infrastructure, Legal Studies, Planning & Architecture, Public Policy, Mechanical, Oil & Gas, Power, Transportation & Logistics, etc. UPES offers 82 domain focused programs across all these core sectors. The University aspires to conduct Research and Development in diverse areas aiming to cover the full spectrum, from fundamental and theoretical studies, through research of relevance to business and industry with practice-based studies in Energy. UPES has formed 11 virtual centres / institutes of research, each working in a particular strategic area, by bringing together its research expertise, knowledge-base and key skills into interdisciplinary teams. These centres/institutes represent their view of the integrated solutions to most pressing energy challenges for the present society to which they believe their expertise and research can make a real and lasting contribution. There are many ongoing projects such as Development of Knowledge-based Tutoring system for seismic data interpretation using visual and analytical tools integrated intelligent tutoring, Development of Catalyst and Process for 1. Isomerization of n-pentene and hexene hydricarbon in single step and 2. Dimerization of n-butene to iso-octane in single step and many more. It has patents as well which includes Rash Driving Monitoring System, Wireless Sensor Network based Patient Health Monitoring and Tracking System etc.
