The University of Ferrara is one of the oldest establishments in Italy in 1391 by Alberto V, Marquis of Este, and approved by Pope Boniface IX. Initial courses were in expressions of arts, theology and law and from the earliest starting point it pulled in well-known teachers. These included Bartolomeo of Saliceto, "Prince of the jurists", and Guarino of Verona, who had Enea Silvio Piccolomini (the future Pope Pious II) among his students. At the start of the twentieth century, the University of Ferrara had in excess of 500 students, as the most well-known of the autonomous Italian colleges. Amid the Fascist period, in 1934, the school of Pharmacy was moved up to a Faculty. This added to the three current faculties of Law, Medicine and Surgery, and Science. After the Second World War, all Italian colleges experienced significant progressions, connected to the progressive increment in student bodies and the production of new Faculties. Somewhere around 1968 and 1969, the Faculty of Education was opened. This was consequently renamed Literature and Philosophy. Therefore we achieve an aggregate of five Faculties with thirteen degree courses, to which we must include the two-year designing course. The latest extension occurred amid the 90s, with the opening of three new Faculties: Architecture, Engineering and Economics.
