The University of Calcutta was established by East India Company in the year 1857 with the motto of "Advancement of Learning" and adopted he pattern of University of London. There are total 14 campuses under the university. University of Calcutta has 8 faculties i.e. agriculture; arts; commerce; social welfare & business management; education, journalism and library science; engineering & technology; fine arts, music and home science; law and science which have 65 departments under them. There are three Nobel Laureates associated with this university namely Rabindranath Tagore, Dr. Venkata Raman, Amartya Sen. The university also has excellent faculty. The university offers various programs in Post-Graduation level and many doctorates.
