The University of Manchester is a large research university situated in the city of Manchester, England. Manchester University, as it is commonly known, is a public university formed in 2004 by the merger of the University of Manchester Institute of Science and Technology and the University of Manchester. Manchester is a member of the worldwide Universities Research Association group, the Russell Group of British research universities and the N8 Group. The University of Manchester is a major centre for research and a member of the Russell Group of leading British research universities. The university has produced some of the great people who have been awarded noble prize for their contribution to the world. Some of them are like Ernest Rutherford who was awarded Nobel prize in 1908 for his investigations into the disintegration of the elements and the chemistry of radioactive substances. Alexander Todd was awarded Nobel prize in 1957 for his work on nucleotides and nucleotide co-enzymes, Michael Smith in 1993 for his fundamental contributions to the establishment of oligonucleotide-based, site-directed mutagenesis and its development for protein studies, William Lawrence Bragg in 1915 for his services in the analysis of crystal structure by means of X-ray, Niels Bohr in 1922 for his fundamental contributions to understanding atomic structure and quantum mechanics, Andre Geim and Konstantin Novoselov were awarded Nobel prize in 2010 for groundbreaking experiments regarding the two-dimensional material graphene.
