The Government of India established a Project Office of the SAU in the year 2008, of which Prof. GK Chadha, a former Vice Chancellor of the Jawaharlal Nehru University, New Delhi, was appointed the Chief Executive Officer. A SAARC Steering Committee comprising members from all SAARC countries was constituted to oversee the establishment of SAU. The University will focus overwhelmingly on research and post-graduate level programmes. It will ultimately have 12 post-graduate science and non-science Faculties, as also a Faculty of Undergraduate Studies. At full strength, the SAU will have 7000 students and 700 teachers. A flagship Institute of South Asian Studies will also be established in the University. Programmes offered are Applied Mathematics, Biotechnology, Computer Science, Development Economics, International Relations, Legal Studies and Sociology. Research strategy, besides graduate schools and the undergraduate college, the SAU aims at promoting research among the faculty and research scholars. The plan is to have interdisciplinary research centers (IRCs) to carry out research in areas of common interest to SAARC countries. An Institute of South Asian Studies is planned as a flagship research program. You need to log in to the university website and then register and apply online. It is better if you can make payment for the entrance test fee of USD 10 or INR 670 through internet banking or debit or credit card. Those who cannot make payment online are still required to apply online and then make payment through a bank draft. They should write their name, application number and the programme they have applied for on the back of the bank draft (which should be drawn in favour of “South Asian University”, payable at New Delhi) and courier it to the Deputy Registrar Admissions, South Asian University, Akbar Bhawan, Chanakyapuri, New Delhi, 110021, India. However, you will be registered only after your draft has been received. SAU Tuition Fee Waiver for PhD Students: All PhD students will receive tuition fee waiver. Financial Support from SAU for PhD Programmes: Financial support for PhD students of INR 25,000 per month is awarded to students not receiving any kind of scholarship/sponsorship or JRF support from agencies like UGC/CSIR/DBT/ICMR etc. or similar agencies in other SAARC countries.
