The Paris Descartes University was founded in 1971 in Paris. Axel Kahn, a notable geneticist who pioneered the implementation of GM Crops in France, Michel Maffesoli, renowned sociologist, Georges Balandier, a sociologist and anthropologist and Herve Morin, a member of Parliament are some of the notable people from the university. Notable contributions to the field of research are in the area of medical sciences and biomedical sciences. The university, to facilitate a medium between the research professionals and the socio-economic partners in the field, has established Research Management and Valorization Department and Industrial and Trade activities department to promote the growth of research activities in the university. The university also houses two museums, the Museum of Medical Material and the Museum of the History of Medicine. The university operates around 79 research units in various departments across different fields.
