The National University of Maynooth, known as Maynooth University since August 2014, is located in the town of Maynooth, County Kildare, Ireland, 20 km west of Dublin. Today, NUI Maynooth is the most eminent university having about 8,800 students from every county in Ireland as well as from over 75 countries throughout Europe, the United States, Latin America and Asia.
It was founded by the Universities Act, 1997 as a constituent university of the National University of Ireland, but it may be considered Irelands second oldest university, having been formed from St Patricks College, Maynooth which was founded in 1795.
The Times Higher Education listed the university as a Top500 university in 2009 QS World University Rankings. In the year 2012, QS World University Rankings announced NUIM in the 501-550 bracket worldwide. In 2008 the university was given a name of Sunday Times University of the Year. The University has three Faculties – the Faculty of Arts, Celtic Studies and Philosophy; the Faculty of Science and Engineering; and the Faculty of Social Sciences. Therefore, the university offers programs from undergraduate to doctorate levels in a range of disciplines including the traditional humanities, music, education, anthropology, media studies, business, basic sciences, social sciences, computer and electronic engineering.
