The National University of Malaysia is a public university located in Bangi, Kuala Lumpur. It has a teaching hospital; Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia Medical Centre (UKMMC) situated in Cheras and also has a branch campus in Kuala Lumpur. There are over 17,500 undergraduate students, and 5,105 postgraduate students of which 1368 are foreign students from 35 countries.
Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia began its operations on 18 May 1970 and admitted 192 undergraduate students in Jalan Pantai Baru, Kuala Lumpur, a temporary campus housing three main faculties, the Faculties of Science, Arts and Islamic Studies. In October 1977, UKM formed the main campus in Bangi.
Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia is one of five research universities in Malaysia. The Times Higher Education Supplement (THES) gave 185th rank to the university among the worlds top 200 universities in 2006. The Times Inaugural University ranked the university 50th number in 2012. It is placed 53rd and 58th in the Quacquarelli Symonds (QS) Top 500 Asian University Rankings in 2011 and 2012 respectively.
The Ministry of Higher Education has awarded UKM the status of a Malaysian Research University in October 2006 based on a foundation of 30 years of research, to grow in line with the Higher Education Strategic Plan 2007-2020. UKM has also won the Prime Ministers Quality Award in 2006 which indicates its efforts at quality education and management, as outlined by the objectives of the UKM Strategic Plan 2000-2020 (PS2020).
