The National Eye Institute (NEI) was established on August 16, 1968, it is a part of National Institute of Health. In January 11, 1970 Dr. Carl Kupfer was appointed as a first director of NEI. Before the NEI was established, primary responsibility for vision research at NIH was done by the National Institute of Neurological Disease and Blindness (NINDB). Dr. Kupfer was made National Eye Institute (NEI) into the lead agency in vision research. In 1983 NEI received national recognition for its leadership in both clinical ophthalmology and research on eye diseases and disorders. NEI supported research has contributed to visual well-being of the world and has advanced our knowledge of how the eye functions in health and disease. Some of the research supported by the NEI is: Age-Related Macular Degeneration; The Age-Related Eye Disease Study 2 (AREDS2); Comparison of Age-Related Treatment Trial; Diabetic Retinopathy; Early Treatment Diabetic Retinopathy Study (ETDRS); Anti-VEGF Therapy for Diabetic Retinopathy; Glaucoma; The Advanced Glaucoma Intervention Study; The Idiopathic Intracranial Hypertension Trial; Retinopathy of Prematurity; Amblyopia; Extended Patching; Extended Patching; Uveitis and T cells; Ebola and Uveitis; Retinitis Pigmentosa; Gene Therapy and Retinitis Pigmentosa; Bionic Vision; Leber Congenital Amaurosis.
