The university offers 105 undergraduate, 129 masters degree programs and 59 doctoral programs, 22 Faculties and Colleges with more than 2,200 academic staff and 8,500 supporting staff and it was ranked 21st in South East Asia by Time Higher Education in 2009, and the 4th in Thailand by The Office of Higher Education Commission. In 1942, during the rule of Ananda Mahidol, there were plans to open a university but the Second World War has broken out and later after 20 years in 1962, the proposition to open an institution of further education in the fields of engineering and advanced agriculture passed. Thus the Khon Kaen Institute of Technology was born. In 1965 the prime ministers office officially changed the name of University of North East Thailand to Khon Kaen University. The research centre is one of the leading research centers on feed resources and animal feedings in Asia.
