Johannes Kepler University Linz

The Johannes Kepler University Linz (JKU) is a public institution of higher education in Austria. It is located in Linz, the capital of Upper Austria. It offers bachelors, masters, diploma and doctoral degrees in business, engineering, law, science, and social sciences. Found in 1966 under the name Academy for Social and Economic Sciences, JKU is among world’s youngest universities which has grown to become a leader in interdisciplinary research related to social sciences, economics and business. With over 60 innovative degrees at all level in traditional areas of study, the institution aims to provide up-to-date programs, which will meet the changing demands of local business and economy.

Today, 18,036 students study at the park campus in the northeast of Linz, with one out of nine students being from abroad. The university was the first in Austria to introduce an electronic student ID in 1998. In 2012, the Times Higher Education ranked the JKU at 41 in its list of the top 100 universities under 50 years old. According to the ranking, the JKU is the fifth best young university in German-speaking Europe. The university attained high scores for quotations, third-party funding, and internationalization efforts.

The Johannes Kepler University has four faculties: The Faculty of Social Sciences, Economics and Business consists of 32 institutes and offers academic degrees in Economics and Business Administration, Business Informatics, Business and Education, Social Economics, Sociology and Statistics; The Faculty of Engineering and Natural Sciences offers degrees in Technical Mathematics, Computer Science, Technical Physics, Technical Chemistry, Mechatronics and Information Electronics; Faculty of Law offers Bachelors degree in Business Law along with Diploma and doctorate degrees in law; and The Faculty of Medicine which was founded in 2014.

The JKU has its research areas in the field of social sciences, economics, law, natural sciences and engineering as well as human medicine. Supported by the principle of unity of research and teaching, JKU makes an important contribution to society, business and culture through the transfer of research and knowledge. For the 2013-2018 development plan, six fields of excellence were clustered, which are broadly based on a broad range of topics, while at the same time they have areas in which the JKU scientists conduct internationally visible, excellent research. JKU cooperates within the framework of research centers and networks with partners from science, society and business. From the large number of these cooperations here a selection: Christian Doppler Laboratories, COMET - Competence Centers for Excellent Technologies, National Research Networks (NFN) / Specialized Research Areas (SFB), Johann Radon Institute for Computational and Applied Mathematics (RICAM) at the Austrian Academy of Sciences, Research Studios Austria. University research quality is one of the most complex quality assurance systems a company has developed so far. With its commitment to the European Charter for Researchers and the Directive on Safeguarding Good Scientific Practice, JKU strives to ensure its high level of research. The Quality Management and Reporting department performs conceptual work to develop systematic and documented quality management in the relevant areas of the university and coordinates certification projects commissioned by the Rectorate.
