Organic agriculture has been increased since 1990 and so the Government of Hong Kong has extended its support to establish an industry which strives for the development of organic agriculture. Organic agriculture, and actively bring new development direction for farmers and develop a higher return on the market. To make the organic product market healthy and rapid development, there is a need to develop a set of organic standards and certification systems for organic agriculture. Hong Kong Organic Resource Centre was established in December 2002 but officially launched in March 2003. The Center will strive to raise awareness among local farmers, consumers and the general public about organic crop and product certification and to promote sustainable development of organic agriculture and aquaculture to ensure that Hong Kong people enjoy safe and quality food for the next generation To create an ecological balance of living environment.
The Center will develop open organic standard and certification system for organic products in a professional and focused manner and will be implemented. At the same time, the Center will also provide technical support and market information for the industry to provide consumers with organic farming, organic aquatic knowledge and consumer information.
The Center comprises of the Supervisory Committee, the Executive Committee, the Hong Kong Organic Resource Center Certification Company Limited and the Center staff. The Oversight Committee is mainly responsible for overseeing the operation of the Center and developing the direction of the Center, which consists of Organic Certification Limited and the Executive Committee. Organic Certification Co., Ltd. specializes in certification services and independent operation, and under the standards committee and the certification committee, was responsible for the development of standards and makes a decision. The Executive Committee is responsible for managing the staff of the Center to implement fundraising, education and development projects and assisting the administrative work of the Organic Certification Company. The Company is actively promoting Hong Kongs organic development and working with the industry to develop organic crop production, aquaculture and processing standards and provide professional organic certification services.
