Federal University of Ceara (LABOMAR/UFC) was founded in 1960, in the city of Fortaleza, Brazil, as a laboratory for marine studies. The LABOMAR/UFC conducts applied and scientific research on marine sciences and hosts two undergraduate programs, namely: 1) Oceanography and Environmental Sciences; and 2) Tropical Marine Sciences. It is a nationally-acclaimed academic centre for marine sciences in Brazil, with studies focusing on the preservation of ecosystems, the impact of the environment on the sea coast and employment and income in the sea fishing industry. The LABOMAR/UFC is also a centre for investigation, improvement and development of new aquaculture technologies, with focus on innovative and applied research; projects with social and technological components; and hands-on training for students. The LABOMAR/UFC can effectively contribute to this project because it has 50 years of leading experience on the 3200 km of coast line in North-eastern Brazil. The centre is composed of 21 permanent professors (all have Ph.D. degrees) and 35 technicians (3 Ph.D. and 10 M.Sc among them) and are involved in education, research and technology transfer to improve the development of aquaculture and fisheries in Ceara State and North-eastern Brazil
