Alabama Agricultural and Mechanical University was established in 1875 with the name of “Huntsville Normal School” by a former slave, William Hooper Council in downtown Huntsville to teach Industrial education. It was elected as land-grant institution by federal Government in 1891; the name was changed to Alabama Agricultural and Mechanical College in 1969. Albama A&M University functions as teaching, research and public service institution including extension. The mission of the University is to become a progressive institution of academic excellence.
