North American Butterfly Association

The NABA formed in 1992 is, considerably, the largest group of people in North America (Mexico, United States, and Canada) fascinated for butterflies. It is a membership-based non-profit organization working to increase the conservation of butterfly species throughout North America and provides grants to help the endangered Schaus’ Swallowtail in Florida. NABA successfully appealed the USFWS and the State of Florida to announce Miami Blues an endangered species. They successfully influenced the U.S. Army not to implement a plan that would destroy the last known viable colony of Regal Fritillaries east of the Mississippi River. NABA is on the directing committee of a governmental NGO partnership (Monarch Joint Venture) formed to preserve the spectacular migrations of Monarchs in North America. NABA is the lone NGO member of the Florida Imperilled Butterfly Working Group. NABA owns and operates the National Butterfly Centre (NBC), which are a conservation, education and research centre in Texas. NABA has transformed what was an agricultural field, when acquired in 2002, into a botanical garden, the largest in United States focused on using native plants in a garden setting. More than 220 wild butterflies’ species have now been seen at the NBC. NABA promotes the creation of habitats that help increase the population of butterflies. A Butterfly Garden Certification is also presented to Individuals and institutions. NABA runs the NABA Butterfly Monitoring Program and has the largest database of butterfly manifestations and abundances in the world. These data are used by scientists to study and answer questions about butterfly biology. NABA is changing the people’s perspective to an association with binoculars, cameras, gardening and family fun rather than an association of butterflies with nets and teaches how to create successful butterfly gardens, how to identify them, and how to photograph them. Your involvement with butterflies will help to bring beauty and satisfaction to your life.
