The European Society for Clinical Virology (ESCV) is the successor of the European Group for Rapid Viral Diagnosis (EGRVD) and the European Association against viral diseases (ESAVD), which merged in ESCV, 1 January 1997. ESCV is open all interested viruses as causes of disease in humans and animals, either as (general), paediatrician, veterinarian, infectious disease specialist, virologist (clinical) or microbiologists. It aims to improve knowledge of viruses, especially regarding the diagnosis and management of viral diseases, pathogenesis, natural history and prevention, improvement of diagnostic methods, maintain and improve high standards in laboratory viral diagnosis through the promotion of quality assessment (QA) and education, to facilitate the exchange of reference reagents, to interact with relevant organizations such as the World Health Organization (WHO), other government agencies, corporations and other virological groups and between members. The Company provides a limited number of grants to researchers to enable them to visit the Clinical Virology diagnostic centres in Europe, to learn special techniques or news value for their future clinical work or laboratory. Gardner Lectureship was established in 1995 to give annual Lectureship by an eminent virologist, preferably, but not essentially, with a central interest and practical experience in the field of diagnostic or clinical virology.
