Oral Rehydration

Oral rehydration involves replenishing lost fluids and electrolytes through oral solutions to prevent or treat dehydration, often caused by diarrhea or vomiting. Oral rehydration solutions (ORS) typically contain a precise balance of salts, sugars, and water to quickly restore fluid levels and electrolyte balance in the body. This method is particularly effective for managing dehydration in both children and adults, as it is simple, cost-effective, and can be administered at home. ORS is a critical component of treatment strategies in both developing and developed countries, helping to reduce the risk of severe dehydration and associated complications.

Oral Rehydration Salts (ORS) are a medical treatment used to prevent and manage dehydration caused by conditions such as diarrhea and vomiting. ORS contains a specific balance of salts (sodium and potassium) and sugars (glucose) dissolved in water. This combination helps to quickly restore lost fluids and electrolytes, enabling the body to rehydrate effectively. The glucose enhances the absorption of sodium and water in the intestines. ORS is a vital tool in treating dehydration, especially in areas with limited access to medical facilities, and is recommended by organizations like the World Health Organization (WHO) for its simplicity, affordability, and effectiveness.
