Lung cancer is the rapid growth of abnormal cells in the lung tissue. Lung cancer surgery can involve removing a portion of the lung or the entire lung. After the cut is made between the ribs, all or part of the lung is removed depending on the location, size, and type of lung cancer that is present. An operation to remove the lung cancer and a small portion of healthy tissue is called a wedge resection. Removing a larger area of the lung is called segmental resection. Surgery to remove one of the lung's five lobes is called lobectomy. Removing an entire lung is called pneumonectomy.
