Description of the country
Indonesia is the country in Southeast Asia and situated between the Indian and Pacific Ocean. The name Indonesia derives from the Greek translation of the Indus River and the word nesos, meaning “Indian island”. It has an estimated population of over 258 million people and is the world’s fourth most populous country. The world’s most populous island of Java contains more than half of the country’s population. Its capital city is Jakarta.
Geography of the country
Indonesia is the largest island country with 13,466 islands, about 6,000 of which are inhabited. The largest are Java, Sumatra, Borneo, New Guinea and Sulawesi. It is the largest archipelagic country in the world. The country has at least 150 active volcanoes, including Krakatoa and Tambora, both famous for their devastating eruptions in the 19th century. Indonesia is the world’s 15th largest population in terms of land areas and world’s 7th largest country in terms of combined sea and land area.
Status of economy, research and development
The Indonesian economy is the world’s 16th largest by nominal GDP and the 8th largest by GDP at PPP. The country is the largest economy in Southeast Asia and a member of the G-20 major economies. The major imports include machinery and equipment, chemicals, fuels and foodstuffs. The major export commodities include oil and gas, electrical appliances, plywood, rubber and textiles. Garuda Indonesia is the eight best airlines in the world and awarded as a “5-Star Airline” by Skytrax. Palapa satellite was first launched in July 1976, making Indonesia the first developing country to operate its own satellite system. Traditional wooden Pinisi ship still used for inter-Indonesian islands freight service.
Status about the different subjects in which extensive research is going on
In Science and Medicine, several universities like Gunadarma University (UG), Universitas Pendidikan Indonesia (UPI), Diponegoro University (Undip) etc research can be seen. University of Indonesia was the most familiar one for research of Rehabilitation in Indonesia. Numerous medical journals are published from Indonesia with good reputation. Rehabilitation is the re-integration into society of a convicted person and the main objective of modern penal policy,to counter habitual offending. Journals regarding Rehabilitation are journals of Terriosm Research, Journal of Geology and Mining Research, Center for International Forestry Research, Journal of Agricultural Science and others are spearheading the medical research.
