Abstract

The clinical presentation of varicella in adults is frequently associated with complications, particularly varicella pneumonia. Most cases occur in immunocompromised adults but immunocompetent can have serious pulmonary compromise. We report the case of an immunocompetent patient admitted to the intensive care unit with dyspnea and an exanthematous vesicular rash. We diagnosed varicella pneumonia based on the presence of a typical skin rash, pulmonary symptoms and contact with a child with chickenpox, confirmed by positive serology of varicellazoster virus (VZV). The patient made a full recovery with mechanical ventilation and anti-viral therapy.
