The practice of midwifery in the western frontier of the United States in the 19th century was a challenging and yet vital profession. Midwives played a critical role in the childbirth process of many women in the West during a time when medical care was limited and often inaccessible. Midwifery required a unique set of skills, and midwives were highly respected members of their communities.
