Abstract

This study aims to highlight different methodologies that have been adopted in the recent researches for removal of nutrients (organics) and pesticides (tebuconazole, imazalil, terbuthylazine, etc) by using constructed wetlands technology. Phenomena behind the removal of nutrients and pesticides in constructed wetlands (interception, retention, sorption by substrates, plants uptake, and metabolization) are also enlisted. Pesticide sorption by the substrate and plant phytoaccumulation made limited contributions to pesticide removal. Thus, biodegradation and plant metabolization were the main removal pathways in CW designs. The present study also proposes some combination of constructed wetlands e.g with a solar photo-catalytic oxidation or with biopurification system and some designs of constructed wetlands e.g hybrid wetland systems for the purification of wastewater contaminated with pesticides. This review paper would contribute in future to provide efficient removal techniques for the water management sector in cost effective manner.
