Abstract
A theoretical framework is proposed for studying wear phenomena due to contact between two solids. Wear is characterized by the loss of matter from the solids in contact. The loose particles as well as the damaged parts of the two solids form an interface to complex mechanical properties. The border zones of the two solids are the seat of dissipation associated with the loss of matter of the bodies in contact. We examine the case of continuous wear and we highlight the different global quantitative approaches characteristic of the phenomenon of wear.
