Abstract
Periodontitis, a chronic inflammatory disease of the supporting structures of teeth, is a major cause of tooth loss globally. For decades, it was believed that specific pathogenic bacteria were solely responsible for the progression of periodontitis. However, recent advancements in microbiology and metagenomics have revealed that microbial dysbiosis-an imbalance in the oral microbial ecosystem is the central driver of this disease. This article delves into the role of microbial dysbiosis in periodontitis, its implications for disease progression, and the potential therapeutic strategies targeting this imbalance
