Abstract

Rice is a crucial staple crop, feeding over half of the global population. However, challenges such as increasing climate change, pests, diseases, and resource limitations threaten its productivity. Genetic engineering and CRISPRCas9 gene-editing technologies offer promising solutions for improving rice yields by introducing traits like disease resistance, drought tolerance, and nutrient-use efficiency. Genetic engineering has produced transgenic rice varieties, while CRISPR allows for precise, efficient modifications of specific genes. This article explores how these technologies can enhance rice yield, the benefits they offer, such as faster development and sustainability, and the challenges they face, including regulatory hurdles and public perception. It concludes that continued research and innovation in genetic modification techniques could significantly address food security concerns in the face of global challenges.
