Abstract

Thyroid hormones play an important role in the regulation of physiologic processes. Thyroid dysfunction is the second most common glandular disorder of endocrine system. Thyroid disease can lead to imbalance in homeostasis of body & affect healing capacity of tissues. The neuroendocrine system is responsible for adaptation to environmental changes. The oral cavity can be adversely affected by either an excess or deficiency of these hormones. There is a strong relationship between thyroid hormone imbalance & oral health. Therefore, it’s important for every dentist to be aware of the oral manifestations of endocrine disorders, to avoid the resulting complications. The influence of thyroid hormone dysfunction & its impact on oral disease progression needs to be recorded. There is a need for frequent professional evaluations, patient education & consistent educational reinforcement by health care providers in patients with thyroid dysfunctions
