Substance abuse, whether involving drugs or alcohol, poses a significant public health challenge globally. Understanding the cognitive and behavioral characteristics associated with defensive mental approaches to substance use is essential for effective prevention and intervention strategies. This abstract provides an overview of the key characteristics of defensive mental approaches in the context of both drug and alcohol use. It draws attention to the psychological mechanisms employed by individuals to rationalize, deny, or minimize the negative consequences of their substance use. By recognizing and comprehending these traits, healthcare professionals, researchers, and policymakers can develop more targeted and effective approaches to address substance abuse and addiction.
