Gastrointestinal (GI) symptoms, including abdominal pain, diarrhea, and constipation, are prevalent among children and often coincide with nutritional deficiencies, such as iron and vitamin D. These symptoms can arise from diverse causes such as infections, dietary intolerances, or chronic conditions like Inflammatory Bowel Disease (IBD). The resulting malabsorption of essential nutrients poses significant challenges in clinical practice, impacting growth, development, and overall health. This study critically examines the complex interplay between GI symptoms and nutritional deficits in pediatric populations, emphasizing the need for comprehensive evaluation and management strategies. Effective understanding and intervention are pivotal in preventing long-term health complications, underscoring the importance of tailored approaches to optimize pediatric nutritional health and quality of life.

Gastrointestinal symptoms such as abdominal pain, diarrhea, and constipation are prevalent in childhood and can profoundly affect nutritional health. Abdominal pain, a common complaint, can disrupt eating patterns and lead to reduced food intake, impacting nutrient absorption. Diarrhea and constipation can alter the gut environment, impairing the absorption of essential nutrients like vitamins and minerals critical for growth and development [1]. Prolonged or recurrent GI symptoms may increase the risk of nutritional deficiencies, which in turn can hinder cognitive development, compromise immune function, and impair overall health outcomes in children. Thus, recognizing and addressing gastrointestinal symptoms early is crucial to mitigate their potential impact on nutritional status and promote optimal health during critical developmental stages.

Conditions such as Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS), Inflammatory Bowel Disease (IBD), and lactose intolerance are explored for their roles in inducing malabsorption and subsequent nutrient deficiencies among children. The prevalence and clinical significance of deficiencies in essential nutrients such as iron, vitamin D, calcium, and B vitamins are emphasized, underscoring their critical impact on bone health, immune function, and cognitive development in young patients. Deficiencies in these nutrients often result from impaired absorption in compromised GI tracts, exacerbated by chronic inflammation or dietary restrictions associated with GI disorders [5,6]. Recognizing and addressing these deficiencies early are crucial for mitigating long-term health consequences and optimizing pediatric health outcomes, necessitating integrated management strategies that encompass dietary modifications, supplementation, and targeted therapeutic interventions.
Results
Recent studies have consistently shown a significant prevalence of nutritional deficiencies in children suffering from chronic Gastrointestinal (GI) symptoms, notably in cases of Inflammatory Bowel Disease (IBD) and severe functional GI disorders.
