Pulmonary Arteriovenous Malformations (PAVMs) are anomalous arteriovenous communications without intervening capillary beds and consist of a dilated, tortuous feeding artery, an aneurysmal sac, and a drainage vein. Symptoms are mainly caused by right-to-left shunting or rupture and include dyspnea, cyanosis, polycythemia, and hemoptysis. In addition, more serious neurological complications such as cerebral stroke and brain abscess can be caused by paradoxical embolization, the risk of which is significantly higher for PAVMs with feeding arteries that are 3 mm or more in diameter.
