Marine sponges (phylum Porifera) are among the oldest multicellular invertebrate organisms exhibiting a wide variety of colors and shapes. About 8,000 species of sponges, inhabiting different marine and freshwater ecosystems have been described to date. Marine sponges continue to attract wide attention from marine natural product chemists and pharmacologists alike due to their remarkable diversity of bioactive compounds. More than 5,300 different natural products are known from sponges, and more than 200 additional new metabolites from sponges are reported each year.
