Malnutrition defined as under-nutrition in this article is a global public health problem underlying many childhood deaths. Although global underweight figures have been showing declining trends in children under 5 years, underweight rates continue to rise in Africa. The number of underweight children is estimated to increase from 24 million to 43 million by 2015 in Sub-Saharan Africa.
