Italy is a country situated in the southern part of Europe surrounded by Mediterranean Sea bordering France, Austria, Slovenia and Switzerland in the north. Its capital city is Rome and is known for its fashion hub throughout the world.

Geographically, Italy is a boot shaped peninsula with 1,130 km long comprising a total area of 301,238 Km2. It is having two largest Mediterranean islands of Sardania and Sicily along with 68 smaller islands. There are two independent states within Italy’s border – Vatican City and San Marino. Most of the Italy experience moderate climate with some extreme cold in the north.

Due to its creative and innovative business, it is well recognized as industrialized nation in the world. Italy is a leading country in world trade and exports, food, agriculture sector, automobile, machinery, design and fashion industry.

The country has contributed its valuable services towards scientific community with major discoveries in Physics and other sciences and produced 20 Nobel Laureates so far since 1906. Research in diverse fields is supported through Regional, National and European programmes. Some of the funding agencies listed are European Commission, European Research Council, European Science Foundation, National Research Council, Ministry of Education, Universities and Research.
