Raw output of German scientific research consistently ranks top in the world. Research and Industries cooperate in many areas, like there are numerous joint programmes and research projects involving companies as well as research and research-funding organisations. Germany is the fourth-largest producer of automobiles worldwide, after Japan, the US and China. The automotive industry is considered the driving force of the German economy. RISE Germany offers summer research internships in Germany for undergraduate students from the United States, Canada, and the United Kingdom. RISE Germany internships were first offered in 2005 to applicants from the United States and Canada, with the program extended to the United Kingdom in 2009.
