Ashim K Mitra was recently named one of two recipients for the 2007 ARVO/Pfizer Ophthalmics Translational Research Award He is the Vice Provost for Interdisciplinary Research for the University of MissouriKansas City August 2004 and Director of Translational Research at UMKC School of Medicine He is also the University of Missouri Curators’ Professor of Pharmacy and UMKC’s Chairman of Pharmaceutical Sciences School of Pharmacy He joined his current position after serving as an Associate Professor in the School of Pharmacy at Purdue University West Lafayette Indiana He is the author and coauthor over 250 research articles book chapters and review papers Dr Mitra is the recipient of a numbers of research awards from the National Institutes of Health the American Association of Pharmaceutical Scientists the American Association of Colleges of Pharmacy and numerous pharmaceutical organizations He is the 1999 recipient of the University Trustee’s Faculty Research award from the University of Missouri and 1992 recipient of National Collegiate Inventor of the Year Award from the National Invention Center and the BF Goodrich Corporation He has served as the editor of a book titled “Ophthalmic Drug Delivery Systems” which is currently in its second edition and coeditor of “Advanced Drug Delivery Reviews
His research interests also include nasal and pulmonary delivery of macromolecular drugs particularly peptides and proteins.

Since 1991 he is full professor of Biochemistry at the University of Naples “Federico II”, where he teaches Industrial Enzymology in the degree on Biomolecular and Industrial Biotechnology. Since 2002 he is component of the Ph.D. Council on Biotechnology of the University of Naples "Federico II". Since 1990 he carried out research activity at the Department of Food Science and, since 2013, at the Department of Chemical Sciences of the University of Naples "Federico II". In the past he carried out research activity at the Department of Biochemistry and Biophysics of the Second University of Naples, and at the Mental Health Research Institute of the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor, U.S.A.. The scientific activity is documented by more than 150 articles published on journals and books having worldwide distribution and by four patents of industrial invention. He is editor of several scientific texts, Editor-in-chief of “Journal of Biotechnology and Biomaterials” (Omics Publ. Group) and also member of the Editorial Boards of the “Open Biotechnology Journal” (Bentham Science Publ.) and “Enzyme Research” (Hindawi Publ. Corporation). Since 2013 he is President of the Italian Board of the Full Professors in Biochemistry.
The use of the enzyme transglutaminase both to modify peptide and protein structure and activity, as well as to produce hydrocolloidal edible films, is currently the most important field of his researches.

A group of research scholars is working under his guidance on the areas ranging from Applied Microbiology, Environmental Biotechnology, Bioremediation, and Industrial Liquid Waste Management to solid state fermentation. His work has been focused to assess the impact of industrial pollution on microbial diversity of wastewater following cultivation dependant and cultivation independent analysis. His major work involves isolation, screening, identification and Genetic Engineering of high impact of Microbes for the degradation of hazardous materials. He has more than 115 research publication in highly reputed national and international journals. He directs the Research program at Enviro Technology Ltd., Ankleshwar. He has guided more than 50 Post Graduate students in various disciplines of Life Science. He is an active Editorial Board Member in 35 highly reputed Journal’s in the field of Environmental & Biological Sciences.
