I grew up in Arlington, Virginia as an only child. I graduated from George Mason University with a Bachelor’s in Business. Next, I worked for the Virginia Department of Corrections as a Road Gang/Correctional Officer. I moved to Kentucky and earned a Masters of Social Work (MSW) from the University of Kentucky and a Masters of Divinity (M.Div.) from Lexington Theological Seminary. I worked as an Associate Pastor for a small Disciples of Christ Church on the Kentucky River. I next worked as an outpatient therapist and an on-call emergency room counselor in Wyoming for two years. I next attended The Ohio State University where I earned a Ph.D. in counseling. I next moved to Baltimore, Maryland where I have worked as a Professor at the University of Maryland since 1987. I teach psychopathology (DSM-5) and mental health policy. I taught pastoral counseling and marriage counseling for St. Mary’s Seminary Ecumenical Institute.
