Franz Oesch

University of Mainz

Biography

Professor Oesch is Swiss (born in Zurich) and works since 1974 in Germany at the University of Mainz. He studied Biology and Chemistry, received his Ph.D. (Dr. rer. nat.) in 1969 from the University of Fribourg in Switzerland and the degree of Privatdozent for Pharmacology and Toxicology in 1973 from the University of Basel, Switzerland. He underwent postdoctoral training at the National Institutes of Health in Bethesda, Maryland, USA from 1969 to 1971, worked as Senior Research Associate at the Biozentrum of the University of Basel from 1972 to 1974, became Professor for Pharmacology and Toxicology at the University of Mainz, Germany in 1974 and in 1983 Director of the Institute of Toxicology of the University of Mainz. Since 2004 he is Emeritus Professor and Emeritus Director of the Institute of Toxicology, University of Mainz (still active; still some grant projects). He is member of many Editorial Boards of scientific journals (present and past totally 17), member in several Executive Committees of scientific societies (present and past totally 6), Honorary member of 2 scientific societies (International Society for the Study of Xenobiotics [ISSX] and German Society of Toxicology), member of many Advisory Commissions (present and past totally 27), received several scientific prices (totally 7; including Robert Koch Price and German Cancer Price) and other honors (Most Quoted Scientists: belonging to the top 0.1 % [Current Contents No. 41, October 12, 1981]; Election to the Academia Europea, to the National Academy of Sciences of Germany and to the National Academy of Medicine of France; Award of the International Society for the Study of Xenobiotics; Roll of Honour of the International Union Against Cancer; Werner Heisenberg-Medaille; Otto Warburg Memorial Lecture, Berlin; Gerhard Zbinden Memorial Lecture Award 2000; Poulsson Medal and Annual Lecture Award of the Norwegian Society of Pharmacology and Toxicology 2012; Keynote Lecture, EUROTOX Congress, Interlaken 2013; more than 500 invited lectures; more than 700 publications).
