Biography

Thomas Goudoulas, Chem. Eng., was born in 1971 and obtained his PhD in experimental rheology by the Aristotle Univ. of Thessaloniki (2003). He has been assigned as adjunct Assistant Professor in Greek Universities and Technological Institutes, for about a decade. He has participated in a number of national and international research projects, mainly as a rheology expert. There was a successful professional activity for five years, as consultant engineer on R&D issues. Currently, he is senior researcher in experimental projects of complex biofluids in TUM, WZW Freising, DE. His published work comprises rheological characterization of suspensions as well as studies of various biomaterials (e.g. synovial fluid, alginate foulants, MBR biofilms) and linear, high-molecular weight polymers in semi-dilute conditions. His research interests currently include gelation properties of binary mixtures, rheology of soft matter and rheo-PIV.

Research Interest

Dr. Goudoulas has been mainly engaged in experimental rheology of various materials. He has served as consultant for the industry and he contributed to development of innovative products. In the beginning of his research activities, he was focused on non-colloidal suspensions rheology. Currently, particular emphasis is given to biomaterials, both on developing successful preparation methods as well as new techniques for appropriate rheological characterization (e.g. in situ measurements). Lately, a PIV system is engaged with a rheometer to obtain insights into the microstructure of dense polymer solutions; for example, identifying shear banding in semi-dilute conditions.
