Biography

Dr. Lawrence E. Schaufler is currently a Research Chemist with the U.S. Department of Commerce within the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA), as part of the National Marine Fisheries Service and the Alaska Fisheries Science Center, located at the Ted Stevens Marine Research Institute in Juneau, Alaska. Dr. Schaufler earned dual B.S. degrees from the California Institute of Technology in Pasadena, CA in Biology and Chemistry, and received his Ph.D. from the University of Washington in Seattle, WA in the areas of protein biochemistry and molecular biology. His research with NOAA over the past 8 years has focused on the bioenergetic characterization of various species and their trophic relationships, as well as the use of fatty acid signatures in stock identification, prey elucidation, and related topics. Dr. Schaufler served as the chairman for the local American Chemical Society (ACS) section in 2007-8, and is a key organizer in various outreach events such as the Intel Southeast Alaska Regional Science Fair. He has also served as president and director for nonprofit organizations in the Juneau community, and is a founding member of the Southeast Alaska RiteCare Program, helping children address speech and language disorders, at no cost to the parents.
