Biography

Dr Sarinder obtained her Bachelor’s and Masters degrees in Computer Science from University Malaya. She was the first graduate to be awarded a PhD in Bioinformatics from University Malaya. Dr Sarinder started the Integrated Biological Database Initiative in UM in 2003 and since then has digitized and developed many biodiversity databases and applications to be used by scientists in UM. Dr Sarinder has published her work in many renowned journals in the field of Bioinformatics, Systematics and Biodiversity, and Computer Science. Dr Sarinder is currently supervising 10 postgraduate students in various research areas of Biodiversity Informatics as well as Health Informatics. Her strong interest in semantic databases has led her to participate in many research projects globally. She has active research collaborations with University of Cambridge, UK, RIKEN Institute, Japan and Wright State University, USA. Dr Sarinder has been awarded twice for Excellent Service in University Malaya and has also served in various administrative positions in UM specialising in curriculum review of undergraduate and postgraduate Bioinformatics programs. Dr Sarinder is also an EXCO member of Malaysian Society of Bioinformatics and also a Visiting Scholar to the Computer Laboratory Faculty, University of Cambridge, UK. Besides professional activities, Dr Sarinder is active in social activities. As the female bureau chief of an NGO, she has been contributing her time and energy in efforts to formulate and carry out community-based activities primarily involving women development all over the state. She has been helping in coordinating many medical camps for the poor in rural villages.
