Biography

Ralph E. Gundel, OD, FAAO had over 7 years of clinical research experience in industry with American Hydron and later Allergan Hydron, before joining the Contact Lens faculty of the State College of Optometry in 1989. Current activities include didactic lecturer, laboratory coordinator, as well as clinical instructor. His areas of expertise include contact lens applications for keratoconus, orthokeratology, presbyopia, as well as post trauma and post surgical applications. In addition he is a Master’s level graduate faculty advisor. Dr. Gundel was a co-investigator for the NEI supported CLEK (Collaborative Longitudinal Evaluation of Keratoconus) study and has published over 40 research papers and abstracts related to contact lenses and contact lens care, and co-authored two textbook chapters on contact lens fitting.

Research Interest

His research experience spans a wide range of contact lens applications including the design and utilization of both rigid an soft lens materials, as well as the contact lens management of individuals with astigmatism, bifocal correction, dry eye, irregular cornea (i.e., keratoconus), as well as post corneal surgery patients. Most recently he has been investigating the assessment of visual function with contact lens correction and the potential role of anti-inflammatory agents in the management of keratoconus patients.
